The Gauteng City-Region Observatory (GCRO), a research centre established
in partnership with the Gauteng Provincial Government, the University of the Witwatersrand and the University of Johannesburg – has just launched a photographic competition
open to students and staff members at tertiary institutions within the Gauteng City-Region (GCR).
As
part of our research project, Creative Visualisations, we wish to
encourage students and staff at tertiary institutions in the Gauteng
City-Region (GCR) to show how they perceive the GCR
through photography. Therefore the project is focused on giving voice to the imaginary of the space and place that is the Gauteng City-Region.
The photographic competition comprises five themes of entry: the region’s life and people; its space and how we occupy it and move around in it; making
a living, trade and business activities; how we use or sustain its resources and environment; and its politics and governance.
We would be grateful if you could help by encouraging students and staff in your department to enter as we think the competition
and the themes it engages
with speak to some of the issues and questions your field of study
engages with. Therefore, we were wondering if you, or an appropriate
member of staff, would help in promoting the competition to the students in your department. We have also thought the competition
could be integrated into an assignment or project which is exploring
questions of identity and meanings of space and place. The
department/institution would also have access to the submitted photographs as long as they would be used for educational purposes
only.
